Liverpool Parade Tragedy: Police Granted Extra Time to Question Suspect

In a somber turn of events during Liverpool’s Premier League victory parade, a car plowed into a crowd of football fans, resulting in 79 injuries. The incident occurred on Water Street shortly after 6:00 PM BST on Monday. Merseyside Police have arrested a 53-year-old man from West Derby on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving, and driving under the influence of drugs.

The suspect allegedly followed an ambulance through a roadblock that had been lifted to allow medics to reach a person experiencing a suspected heart attack. Authorities have been granted additional time to question the man, extending his detention until Thursday. Seven individuals remain hospitalized, while the rest have been treated and discharged.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer visited Merseyside Police headquarters to meet with senior officers and express support for the ongoing investigation. The incident is not being treated as terrorism-related, and the community continues to mourn the tragic event.
