A father-of-three and former Royal Marine has been charged following a tragic incident during Liverpool’s Premier League victory parade, which left 79 people injured. Paul Doyle, aged 53, from West Derby, was arrested after a car he is alleged to have been driving ploughed into a crowd of supporters on Water Street at approximately 6:00 PM BST on Monday. Among the injured was a nine-year-old child.
Doyle faces multiple serious charges, including causing and attempting to cause unlawful and malicious grievous bodily harm with intent, dangerous driving, and two counts of unlawful and malicious wounding with intent. Seven individuals remain hospitalized, and authorities are reviewing extensive CCTV footage, mobile phone records, and witness statements as part of their investigation.
The local community has expressed shock and disbelief over the incident. Neighbors reported a heavy police presence on Burghill Road in the hours following the crash, with one stating, “I came out late on Monday night and there’s police everywhere. Looking around all the houses, so I had a thought – imagine if it was him?”
Doyle is scheduled to appear at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on Friday. The Crown Prosecution Service has indicated that the charges will be kept under review as the investigation progresses, ensuring that every victim receives the justice they deserve.
