China Evaluating U.S. Overtures for Trade Talks Amid Ongoing Tariff War

By Favoredjane

China has confirmed it is considering U.S. overtures to initiate trade negotiations, raising the possibility of talks aimed at resolving the ongoing trade war between the world’s two largest economies. The announcement comes after senior U.S. officials reached out through various channels to discuss potential negotiations on tariffs.

In a statement released Friday, China’s Ministry of Commerce acknowledged the U.S. efforts but made it clear that any meaningful dialogue would depend on the removal of unilateral tariffs. China reiterated its stance, stressing that failure to lift the tariffs would undermine mutual trust and indicate a lack of sincerity from Washington.

“If the U.S. wants to talk, it should show its sincerity by correcting its wrong practices and canceling the unilateral tariffs,” the ministry said.

This comes amid a backdrop of economic tension, with President Donald Trump imposing a 145% tariff on Chinese goods in 2025, while China retaliated with its own 125% levies. Although both countries have granted exemptions on critical goods to alleviate some economic strain, the tariffs continue to cast a shadow over global markets.

The statement sparked a positive response in global markets, with China’s offshore yuan strengthening by 0.14% to 7.2665 against the U.S. dollar. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index also surged 1.6%, signaling investor optimism at the prospect of a thaw in relations.

The news follows a series of mixed statements from both the Trump administration and Chinese leadership, each side seemingly waiting for the other to make the first move in negotiations. While U.S. officials have confirmed their interest in talks, China’s firm demands for tariff removal highlight the deep challenges in finding common ground.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also indicated that talks may be imminent, though it remains unclear whether a breakthrough is truly on the horizon.

As both nations navigate this delicate diplomatic dance, the world watches closely for signs of a potential resolution to the trade war that has shaken global economic confidence.
