In a dramatic rescue operation, up to 50 residents were safely evacuated from a five-storey block of flats in Warrington after a fire broke out on Monday evening.
The blaze started around 5:20 PM GMT at Rynet Court on Marsh House Lane. Firefighters from across Cheshire were called to the scene, with more than 30 personnel responding to the emergency. The fire quickly spread through the building’s stairwell, trapping residents inside.
Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service reported that the stairwell was heavily affected by the fire, preventing residents from escaping. Firefighters used aerial ladder platforms and breathing apparatus to reach and rescue individuals from the upper floors. One woman described passing her six-year-old son to safety from their first-floor window.
Group Manager David Rutter commended the crews for their efforts, stating, “Crews worked really hard and were able to rescue 50 people from the property.” The fire service also noted that North West Ambulance Service triaged and treated those rescued on-site, with no serious injuries reported.
A nearby Territorial Army centre was opened as a relief accommodation centre for displaced residents. Fire crews remained at the scene overnight, and roads in the immediate area were closed. An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
This incident highlights the importance of fire safety measures in residential buildings and the dedication of emergency services in ensuring public safety during such crises.
